Unlucky 7

Postby sappertitan » 01:23 pm Dec 18 2011

So I just got home from Afghanistan about a week ago and my trigger finger has been itching pretty badly so my buddy tells me his father in law said I can kill a deer on his property. I was only wanting to kill a doe to get some meat in the freezer unless a nice buck showed up. About an hour into the hunt I had seen four 6 points all looked to be 2 1/2 and a few does. All of a sudden the small bucks look up and run away and this 7 point came in chasing a doe. At first I wasn't going to shoot it b/c I was having a hard time telling how old it was but compared to the other bucks it had a bigger body and I could tell he was the dominant buck in that area. After about 15 minutes of watching him my buddy said I should shoot him and I already knew I wanted to as well. As happy as I am with him I kinda feel like I should have let him walk since this was a drought yr and after seeing him up close I think he may only be 3 1/2. My buddies father in law said as long as I was happy he didn't care what I killed so that makes me feel a little better. The buck was killed in Lampasas and had a 14 1/2 inch inside spread not sure how much he weighed but all the deer in that area are pretty small bodied.
