Quail Hunting Update

Postby Slicknasty » 08:17 pm Nov 17 2008

All of us at the 5 Star can not seem to figure out if we have good quail numbers or not. About the time we think the numbers are up...we do not seem many for a couple of weeks...then it is back to seeing a few again...Once the Mesquites drop the leaves and we can get the dogs down here I guess we will find out. Let us know how your numbers are...Thanks, Slicknasty.

The three places I hunt quail at are a bust this year. My dogs are getting worn out from all the hunting and no birds. One farm got rain too late after the hatch, one never got it, and the other place is loaded with skunks, coons, and bobcats, so that is where they went. Needless to say I have been flinging arrows at skunks, kitties, and coons...

Hey Raider,

Thanks for the update. I hope to get my dogs out Thanksgiving week. I will be sure and let you know what we find.

Fellow Quail Hunters,

Well I wished I had better news from greater downtown Verbena, but even though we have found birds, it has not been great.
On 3 1/4 sections in Garza County we have located approx. 12 coveys, all of good size (12-25 birds). We have both Bobs and Blues, with one covey of Blues numbering maybe 40 birds, they are as big as chickens! We have just now started to shuting down some off the feeders and started "corning roads", hopefully we will see more birds now. Our English Setters (Blossom and Millie) have gotten in some good work the few times we have had the girls out.
Blossom gave us a couple of "all world points" on a trip in mid-December. We'll stay after it and keep you updated.
