New Stevens .223 - Pic added 6-23-10

Postby troglodyte » 10:56 pm Jun 17 2010

Ordered a Stevens 200 in .223 package to get into some varmint/predator hunting. Supposed to be in tomorrow afternoon and I'm going to be out of town. Won't be able to pick it up until Tuesday.

First order of business is to disassemble it, clean, and then paint that horrible looking grey stock. Custom paint by Rattle Kan. lol.gif Why they chose that grey is beyond me. I got my youngest son a .270 for Christmas and it had a brown stock that, while no beauty, is much better than the grey.

Then I've got to save up my pennies to replace the cheapo Simmons with a Coyote Special.

That's it but I'm think I'd like to get it in Brush. then again I may just paint it like the rifle....

It will be the end of the summer or early fall before I get the cash for one. Got a quickie workshop here in a couple of weeks. Sad thing is it is funded by a third party but has to go through Tech and they take forever to cut checks.

I'll give you a holler when I see the check and see what you've got.

In the mean time there are some really good older scopes out there for around $100 and even less that you can resell for what you paid for it. One example would be an older simmins aetec when they were still made in the philipines. At least I think thats where they were made. Where do you live? I might be able to get you a loaner scope for the rest of the year or so.

I ordered the rifle/scope combo. It comes with a Simmons Blazer 3-9x40. I'll swap it out asap and keep it as a back up.

The biggest problem with the blazer IMO is it is recoil sensitive, that will not be a problem with a .223. The second biggest problem is the amount of light gathering it has. You can get some chart and read all kinds of stats but, the Aetec is not recoil sensitive and not blury around the edges and very good in low light conditions. There are others but not for less than $100 that I have seen or used, it has to be an older one like I posted above.

When I picked it up I found it came with a Bushnell Sharpshooter scope. Probably not any better than the Simmons but I don't plan on having it on there for long.

Texaslefty had a good idea about the Simmons Aetec. The older ones are great. If you check E Bay and gunbroker you can probably get a good deal on one.
