Pigs destroyed my feeder!!!!

Postby Mike » 03:31 pm Mar 26 2010

I went down to the lease today to fill my feeder and check things out. After I got in the gate I pulled next to one of the stock tanks and saw where the pigs had been rooting pretty bad. I drove a little farther and found this in the middle of the road.

I had to drive around one spot because the road was tore up so bad.

I finally made it to the feeder and this is what I saw.

I am just glad it was a feeder that was left by a previous leasee and the spinner that I bought was still good. I guess this will give me a good excuse to buy the nice big feeder that I have been wanting.

That sucks, how did you have the T-posts tied to the legs? That should have held.

The t-post were some kind of cheep post that were left by the last guy. I am going to put some good t-post out there when I get my new feeder. I am also going to put up a fence around it so the cows will leave it alone.

If the weather is nice this weekend I am going to be down there with two 30 round magazines and a few extra just in case.

Looks like the pigs are getting restless and very destuctive. I have herd of pigs destroying fields and such but havent seen the destruction before until you posted these Pics Mike. The holes they dug are very impresive, now I know why farmers and land owners dont like them.
Looks like I have a good leg to stand on when I go and ask for hunting privelages on an 800 acre Ranch only 15 miles from the house.I have seen some hogs ( about 12 and cought in the action making more) next door to this farm my first time scouting this area out for possible ranches big enough to hunt on.

Have you had any luck yet Mike

They did a number on it all right.
Some suggestions for when you set it back up. This is what I ended up having to do with mine.

Instead of stakes I use rebar. If the ground is soft, you can use as long a piece as you want and drive them deep. I use a section of rebar at each leg driven along side the leg at the same angle. Post driver works fine or you can slide a hammer down the leg driving the rebar, just takes longer but it goes in easy. You only need two or three feet of rebar above ground.

I use three radiator hose clamps each leg. Evenly spaced along the rebar/leg section. Take a cordless drill and socket they can be tightened down in a matter of a few minutes or less. The feeder can not be moved or knocked over this way. If you drive that rebar three feet or more in the ground, they can't dig it up. If they push the dirt away it will just leave the feeder suspended with the rebar showing below. You have basically extended or anchored the leg as deep into the ground as you have driven the rebar.

If the hogs do dig a hole under my feeder, I just come back with sacks of quickrete and fill the hole. Preferably when it is full of water from a rain and hog rooting. Then I can just dump it in the hole of water and mix it a little with a shovel. I also might throw in rocks, scrap barbwire, fence material, whatever is laying around to reenforce the concrete. I repeat as needed.

Want to add. This works on rocky ground to, you just have to move the feeder around till you can line up all three leg bases with cracks in the rock that you can drive the rebar into.
