Very cool amphibous plane from work

Postby helomech » 10:58 pm Dec 24 2009

It was made in the the 30's and this is the only one in the world that is still considered flyable. It needs some work before it goes flying again, but it in great shape. It was bought by Howard Hughes to do a around the world flight, but he never did it. He did crash it bad, but they where able to get it out of the water and repair it. There is a time in the history of this plane that is unaccounted for and it was used for some type of military operations that are classified. Will try to get better pics if I can.

I was gonna say it almost looks like the C-46 and C-47 they used in WWII just with the modifications for water.

It is a Sikorsky plane (can't remember the numbers S-43 or something), there where only about 50 made, and only a few of those had the wheels as an option. Most where strictly for water operations.

edit, yes it is the S-43. Here are some images.

And here is some info on it. It even says in this link that the one Hughes owned is the last flyable one.

That's too cool. Although, as you all know, ain't no need for a float plane around here. Wheels are better in my part. lol.gif
