What to expect

Postby spudmonkey » 11:16 pm Oct 07 2009

This weekend will be my first time out with my bow. I plan on doing a little hunting from my tripod (about 45 yrds from a feeder) and then some ground hunting a few yards from a known travel area. Besides paying more attention to smells what else should I consider? I know that when ground hunting I will need to be more still than in the blind of tripod but is there any tricks or tips? When ground on the ground w/o a pop up how do y'all disguise the movement of picking up the bow and drawing?

Be sure to set up with a bush or large tree trunk between you and where you'd expect the animal to travel down the trail.
When the deer's visual of you is blocked by the tree or bush, that is when you draw and wait for it to step into the clear for your release.
My theory is no movement unless there is something to block thier vision of you.
When the time comes, do it quickly so if they do catch you you can release while they determine if you are a threat or not.
Then you can release before they decide to bolt.

Other than being out on the lease this weekend pretty much sucked. Apparently their is an agreement that our lease and the surrounding land can be used a a dove day lease. All weekend there were dove hunters shooting, it sounded like that scene from Predator when they were mowing down the jungle. To say the lease I didn't see any deer. I did see two raccoons and a jack rabbit, there is one less 'coon in the world. I plan to try again but during the week.
