Axis hunt had to post it here before you know where

Postby tgt » 12:02 am Jun 02 2009

Guys I am about to post this you know where but I wanted it here first. I found out about the hunt there but texaslefty (the OUfan) gave me info on the taxidermist who is now a member here. Thanks to Buffalo Ridge Taxidermy for going out of his way to take care of me and my axis and you guys need to use him !!

hunt was put on by www.pecancrossingranch.com and they were very cool people.

After a great black buck hunt in south Texas I decided to take up hoof-hunter up on his amazing axis specials he was running at his ranch. Somehow I was able to convince my wife that 2 trophy hunts in two weeks was ok and she went for it!!!

I headed down to Lampasas on Saturday and stopped at Buffalo Ridge Taxidermy in Waco on the way. Stephen Swain
(the owner) came to work on a Saturday to meet me and sit down and talk. Keep in mind I was on my WAY to the hunt not after the hunt. After about 45 minutes of fingering everyones deer here on THF (JUST KIDDING) but Frisbee has a nice one down there!!! (sorry Frisbee we have not meet yet but you have a nice rack!!) I headed out for the ranch.

I was greeted at the gate by Steve of Pecan Crossing and we headed down to the ranch. We chatted for a while and he had arranged for another guide (shelby) to join us. I had spoken to Steve several time before the hunt and I was most interested in an Axis in velvet and within 1 to 1.5 hours on the ranch I was on an axis in velvet and another came out behind it. The first axis I had a shot on quartered away before I had any shot.

The next axis came out right after the previous on and I did not give him a chance to quarter away. the .300 barked (quietly again like the Black buck posted earlier here http://www.lonestarhuntingforum.com/my- ... -t491.html and the axis hit the ground. He jumped up for a second but he did not get far at all.

Shelby immediately grabbed his truck and loaded the axis up and had it gutted in about 10 minutes and then was on to skinning and quartering it. 2 coolers full 1 meat and 1 cape/head and we hit the road.

I then called Stephen from the taxidermy again and told him I was about a hour out and he meet me AGAIN ( he came from home again and has a newborn at the house so I hated bringing him out again but I needed this one in the freezer.) This was the first time I meet Stephen from Buffalo Ridge and I can tell you I have a new home for all my Taxidermy work.!. I don't care how far I have to drive but all my animals will go to him. I will also return to Pecan Crossing ranch to hunt with Steve and Shelby again and could have not been treated better. If you are looking for a 1 day hunt and want to see some very nice animals for a very competitive price give him a call.
