What Big Game Have You Hunted Besides White Tail/Mule Deer?

Postby Crazy Horse » 03:35 pm Apr 25 2009

I know that White Tail Deer are the Ultimate Game Animal in Texas, or it seems that way.

I have not had the opportunity to hunt Mule Deer in Texas, hope that will change in the near future.

What have the rest of you hunted and where, as far as Big Game and Exotics go?

Lets see, I've hunted elk and mule deer for 3 seasons in Colorado. Mule deer here in Texas at my lease. No exotics yet but I'm hopeful someday to seriously start looking at some African animals. I'm fixin to go to Canada in a couple of weeks for my first ever bear hunt.

I've been on an axis hunt. Going again in May, hopefully with better luck. This will just be an axis doe hunt.
You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

I bring nothing to the table but whitetails and hogs. Not that I would not mind trying other big game, just never had the chance.

I'm like helomech, never have, but would like the opportunity.
#1 Peacock bass in Brazil, not sure why.
#2 Elk in Montana, the countryside more so than the elk, but it'd be a nice bonus.

I have had the opportunity with Lora's help to hunt a few different species around the country.

I am waiting to find out if I have been drawn for Late Season Cow Elk in Unit 421 in western Colorado this year, and am working on putting a black bear hunt together in Idaho during 2010 as a 60th. Birthday present to myself.

I like the dark background of the forum. Different. Easy on the eyes and its got a Big 'Ol TEXAS flag at the top. Cool!

Back to the topic of the thread.

I'm not gonna list all the stuff I have hunted. It's a lot.
Best thing about them is that probably 85%-90% of all the stuff I have tried is what I would consider edible.

A lot of them can be very challenging. Especially on free range and even tougher with a bow I feel anyway. But who cares what you hunt it with, as long as you enjoy it and don't break any laws doing it and its in your ethical standards your good to go.

Aoudad is one exotic that I have hunted years ago and more than once and still have not scored my own trophy on that species. I wouldn't care for the meat from what little of it I have had. But the challenge of a big male of that species makes it in my top 10.

Another is Nilgai. Kind of hard to find a good deal on them and not many places have them. Very good meat and the hide looks awesome I think just tanned to lay out as a rug. They are one of the few taxidermy mounts that I don't like the look of. No matter what you do to it, I just haven't seen one I like yet. So if I had one, I'd do a skull mount and tan the whole hide to lay out as a rug or something. I have hunted them unsuccessfully so far.

And on the topic of exotics. I wouldn't mind trying to take one of those big ring neck doves with my bow if it was legal and I had the chance. (well I think they are an exotic, not really sure and not really an upland game hunter) I got a few pairs flying around my house that just about stay here year around and they are populating pretty good right now.

Sika is one that I have not personaly hunted yet. I have had the meat from does and bucks that have died when we were trying to trap some other exotics and it was pretty darn good. But I haven't hunted one.

Those ring neck doves are considered an exotic and can be hunted year round with any weapon.

I am having Pheasant and sika for dinner.

Lucky duck. I have sunted Elk twice (unsuccessfully), Antelope several times-lots of fun, and have hunted Fallow deer and Texas Dall sheep with a pistol. Would enjoy more exotic hunts if they weren't so expensive. Maybe get a group hunt?

I am all for a group hunt, maybe Curtis would give us a group rate on some does or something else affordable.

I would love the chance at Axis, Fallow, Sika, Red Stag, Elk, moose, caribou and bear. Really anything that moves I'd like to put on the wall.
