Ben's sow.

Postby slimpickins » 08:11 am Mar 23 2009

Well, with spring break going on, and jls41 planning our annual 4th of July BBQ, we decided we'd better get to hunting.
jls41, Ben (17), Meghan (13) and I pulled out friday morning.
We spetted a few hogs about a mile away, in the river bottom.
After riding the wheelers around, closer downwind, jls41 and Ben put the stalk on them.
Meghan and I stood back and watched.
Once at 70 yards, they put the hammer down on them, and here is Ben's sow, about 130 pounds (perffect eating size). :D

This is the only hog recovered, so I'll let jls41 elaborate, if she chooses, as to why that is.

Anyway, got her field dressed, then remembered the camera, so she looks a little "thin".

Went to set the round trap late friday, and as we rounded the bend, there stood a nice 150-ish pounder in the trap staring at me.
I fire, he runs off, Ben gives chase with pistol. Ben fires at him a few times over a mile stretch and then looses him.
Set the trap, and still set the next morning, guess we stirred the trap site a bit too much.

Notice the rifle, Winchester 94 in a 30-30, that my Granny hunted with most of her life, killing about 30 Colorado Muledeer, best she can recall.
Some of ya'll have heard me talk about it, it has extended barrel, 6 inches longer than any other I have seen.

Straghtest shooting iron sites I've ever peeped through. 8)

Great weekend with the family and he brought the only meat home, good times!!!! :)

Sounds like a good time w/ the family congrats to Ben.
My dad gave me his 30/30 when he moved back to Lubbock two years ago. I'm gonna have to get it out & try the old iron sites thing. cup.gif

Ribs and quarters for the BBQ, and still need a few more to add.

This may be the coolest sentence ever posted on a hunting forum!!!!

Win mod. 94 in 30-30 in the same sentence with my Granny and she hunted muledeer!!!!!!!

You my friend are a lucky man and I hope your son realizes what it mean to have harvested and eaten an animal with the same gun his elders used. GREAT STORY!!! and I hope you guys have many more memorable hunting trips together.

tgt, you sir, are correct, and he does know how much it means.
Back before Christmas, he killed his buck with the same rifle, and there was no way he was going to let uscome home without taking a detour through her town and showing her.
I emailed her a set of these pictures and she replied "The 30-30 sure is a good shooter. Hug his neck and give him a high five from me."
