Pictures from my March 2009 Javelina /Spring Turkey hunts.

Postby Crazy Horse » 09:36 pm May 07 2009

These pictures are of the first two hunters I had in camp this March.

There two guys have been hunting with me for 4 or 5 years now, they are a father and son from Pennsylvania.

Javelinas do stink.

One of the methods I use for hunting them in the brushier areas of the ranch, is to either hunt into the wind or across the wind, trying to catch their scent.

I can tell you from experience however, that a bull elk in rut stinks a lot worse, as does a really big feral hog boar.

If a person will just leave the musk gland on a javelina alone, there is not really a problem.

Apparently I disturbed the musk gland, cause that smelled worse than anything living I've ever smelled. lol.gif

That javelina with a bow is quite an accomplishment. Congratulations!

Thank You Sir.

For me it really was something speial, as it was the only thing I have ever killed with a bow besides a carp.

I have clients out each year with some really good archery set ups, that they have spent more than I would on a good rifle, putting the outfit together.

Using that 40 to 50 year old Herter's bow and the wooden flint tipped arrow just made the whole thing special to me.

I have talked to some folks about making the kill, and they asked if I was going to put away the rifles and bow hunt only, and I have told them, Not A Chance In Hell.   cheers.gif

I have a question????????

What kinds of animals (small game, big game, ect.) will you use a flint tipped arrow to harvest????

I am not a bow hunter (yet) and just wondering.

I ain't a bow hunter either Mike, I will always reach for one of my big rifles when I head out the door.

If I can work things out and get another arrow or two with good flint heads, I would probably try to take a white tail doe, and will probably kill more javelina that way.

Under most circumstances however, I am a die hard rifleman, and am prone to using the larger calibers.

I will never forget that shot on that animal, but it will never replace what I have done over the years with the big guns.

I have put that javelinas tusks and the arrow head on my hunting necklace as my trophy of that hunt.

What I did, and will continue to do when I use that old bow and the wooden arrows, flint tipped or fixed four blade broadheads, is keep a little reality in my life, knowing that animals can still be killed with what many today would consider as antiques, and not worthy of being called archery kills by many folks and their modern standards.

Have you ever heard the Hank Jr. song "Dinosaur", well that is what I am, just a person out of place and out of time, waiting to join the hunting camp full of my buddies that have gone ahead of me to scout things out.

Maybe when I get there I will have the chance to set down at the campfire and ask the real Crazy Horse what it was like to be free.

Sorry for the ramble, it is an Old Guy deal. cup.gif cheers.gif
