First Batch of Bobs Released

Postby Slicknasty » 02:27 pm Jun 17 2009

Hey Gang,

Just to update you on the "Surragator Wildlife Management" program we have started down a the 5 Star. We released our first batch of 5 week old birds yesterday. They flew out of the Surragator just like they were suppose to! We lost 25 of the 125 during the 5 week program, but did release 100 (thats 5 good coveys). Our next batch of day old chicks hits on June 23rd. Hope to loose a few less with warmer weather. In the end we hope to have 200 (10 coveys) of supplemented birds on the ground by November. Of course, our native numbers seem to be up this year......go figure! We will keep you updated.

I like to eat them too much, I'd pop a few out & toss them on the grill. Not sure how many would make it to run free lol.

I hope they make it, I would think 200 extra birds could really make a difference in your population if they reproduced.

Well the second batch is in the "surragtaor". Durning the first 10 days we only lost two (lost 13 the first go around at the this same time). So we are encouraged that with the warmer temps we will release more birds this time. THere is a lot of grasshoppers and an adequate amount of surface water so feel as though the first group has a chance of making it. I do have some photos of the first realease will try to get them posted.

Best of Luck with your project.

This past Monday when I was out in Archer and Young counties, I saw and heard more Bobwhites than I have seen in years.

3 or 4 pairs and several singles.

Did not see any chicks however.

Well I am sure glad to hear that. I have not seen a quail in two years on our place in Young County. Before that we would find 5 covies a day on a hunt. But not a one in two years.
