Family weekend hunt.

Postby slimpickins » 10:26 am Nov 09 2009

Well, I'll try to keep it short.
Meghan's 14th birthday was this past tuesday(Nov. 3rd).
In the past this has cost a hotel room somewhere with an indoor pool and 6 or 8 pizza's for her friends.
This year she said she wanted to go to the cabin hunting and do smores over a campfire.
How in the Lord's name could I possibly pass that up!!!
Wednesday evening I need to shoot everything to make sure rifles are sighted in and ready to go.
She's talked about shooting Jo's rifle but never has.
1st shot she jerks because she is scared. 2nd and 3rd shot she smokes a coke can at 80 yards. Good to go!!
I get there friday and pull camera cards. Jo, Meghan, and brother Ben show up saturday shortly after daylight.
See nothing to speak of saturday morning. Saturday afternoon we drive back to check my hog honey hole.
Sure enough, big black boar. We stalk about 600 yards and she makes a perfect neck shot on him at 40 yards, DRT.
Her first rifle kill ever.

We have ribeyes, taters, onions and mushrooms for supper, and smores on the fire for desert.
Burnt the crap out of my lip trying to clean marshmallow remnants of the coathanger.
Sunday morning she is in the blind with her Mama and an older, fat, healthy doe without a yearling comes in.
I get a text saying she might shoot.....BOOM! Scares the he!! out of me.
Next text says she hit her but she ran off.
I arrive and we (Meghan) blood trail the doe about 300 yards. Lots of lung blood and remnants.
Decent shot but trashed one shoulder.

We had to do the traditional blood on the cheeks.

She took this one when no one was looking.

Get her field dressed and back to camp for processing, she weighed 98 lbs. field dressed.
Get a text from Ben, "Need ride, turkeys are heavy, come get me!"
Jo jumps on a 4 wheeler and goes for him as Meghan and I are busy processing her doe.
Jo and Ben arrive with 2 turkeys that Ben staked up on and shot.
Lead bird had 8 inch beard and 1 1/2 spurs.

So 1 hog 1 doe, both firsts for Meghan and a nice pair of Turkey for Ben.
Probably one of my best hunting trips and I think one of her best birthday weekends.
