Aquaponics system

Postby helomech » 08:16 pm Dec 31 2011

Aquaponics is a way to grow a garden. It is similar to hydroponics, but uses fish to feed the plants instead of man mad fertilizers. Growth of the garden is 10 times that of a conventional garden, with no weeding. If you are interested you can go here for more info, http://www.backyardaquaponics.com.

This is what my system will look like when done. The green parts are the grow beds, and they will be filled with river rocks, so the plants can get their roots into them.

The 1550 gallon fish tank. Will have between 300-400 Channel catfish in here. Can't wait to have fresh catfish anytime I want. The other tanks are IBC's and they will be my temporary grow beds while I finish the system.

Yes lots of work. I did manage to get 2 temporary grow beds plumbed up today and flowing. Going tomorrow to buy some river rock to put in them. Should be able to plant something by Tuesday. These beds are only temporary until I get all my concrete work done which will be a while. Waiting on tax returns.

Here is a pic of the siphon. It allows the water to fill up, then drain the entire container empty.

This is the other part of the siphon.

Got both grow beds filled with river rocks, and planted some peas, beets, turnips. Should have some sprouts when I get home from offshore.
